Tips for Finding the Right HSN/SAC Code
Check the Chapter First
Start by identifying the broad chapter (first 2 digits). For example, all food items start with Chapters 01-24, textiles with 50-63, machinery with 84-85.
Use 8 Digits for Higher Turnover
If your turnover exceeds ₹5 crore, use 8-digit HSN codes on invoices. For turnover up to ₹5 crore, 4 digits are sufficient.
SAC Codes for Services
Services use 8-digit SAC codes instead of HSN. Example: 9983 for accounting services, 9985 for IT services. The GST rate for most services is 18%.
One Product Can Have Multiple HSNs
The same product can have different HSN codes based on specifications. For example, mobile phones under ₹10k and above ₹10k may have different classifications.
How HSN & SAC Codes Work in GST
In plain words
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) codes are a standardized system for classifying goods worldwide. In GST, HSN codes determine the applicable GST rate for products. SAC codes serve the same purpose for services. Using the correct code on your invoice is mandatory and ensures accurate tax calculation.
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature): 4-8 digit codes for goods
SAC (Service Accounting Code): 8-digit codes for services
Structure:
First 2 digits: Chapter (broad category)
Next 2 digits: Heading (specific category)
Next 2 digits: Sub-heading
Next 2 digits: Tariff item
Example: HSN 8471 30 = Computers
84 = Machinery, 71 = Computers, 30 = PortableA quick example
