The 30-Day Gas Cylinder Rule: What Piped Gas Users Need to Know

For decades, the heavy red iron cylinder has been an indispensable fixture in Indian kitchens. We have all experienced the sudden anxiety of a cylinder running empty mid-meal, followed by the comforting relief when the delivery agent hoists a fresh one onto his shoulder and installs it. Because of this deep-rooted habit, many urban households chose to keep their old LPG setup as a backup even after upgrading to modern, seamless Piped Natural Gas (PNG).

However, a newly notified policy means the era of keeping a "backup cylinder" in a PNG-equipped kitchen is officially drawing to a close.

Under the updated Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Amendment Order, the government has firmly established a "One Household, One Gas Connection" framework. If your kitchen transitions to a piped network, a strict countdown begins.

If you are a customer of Indane, BharatGas, or HP Gas and you opt for a PNG connection, you now have exactly 30 days from the date of your piped gas installation to formally surrender your old LPG cylinder connection.

For example, if your new PNG pipeline goes live on June 25, your window to legally hold onto your LPG cylinder closes on July 25.

Once a piped line is running in your home, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) will no longer permit you to book refills or purchase extra LPG. The policy aims to eliminate duplicate connections in resource-dense urban pockets, freeing up vital cylinder infrastructure and government subsidies. By reclaiming these underutilized cylinders, distributors can redirect supply chains to rural and semi-urban regions where piped infrastructure does not yet exist.

Giving up a long-held connection can feel like a risk, especially for families who rent homes or anticipate moving. To address this, the government has included a relief provision: when you surrender your cylinder, your distributor issues a Transfer Voucher. If you relocate to a new city or an area lacking piped gas lines in the future, this voucher guarantees you can instantly restore your active LPG connection without starting the application process from scratch.

Even if you don’t have piped gas, major changes are rolling out across the entire domestic gas ecosystem this month to tighten security and subsidy distribution.

1. The June 30 eKYC Deadline

For households benefiting from the Ujjwala Yojana subsidy scheme, compliance is urgent. Major fuel providers like Indian Oil have issued an official advisory stating that beneficiaries must complete their biometric eKYC verification by June 30. Failing to complete this step will result in an immediate suspension of your cooking gas subsidies.

You can complete this verification digitally via official apps (such as the IndianOil ONE app), or physically by visiting your local distributor or asking your delivery personnel during their next visit.

2. Mandatory OTP Delivery Verification

The days of a delivery agent simply dropping off a cylinder and leaving are gone. To prevent the black-marketing of subsidized domestic fuel, OTP-based delivery validation is now completely mandatory. When your refill is out for delivery, a secure code is sent to your registered mobile number. The delivery agent cannot mark the order as fulfilled—and is legally restricted from handing over the cylinder—until that exact OTP is keyed into their system. Ensuring your correct mobile number is linked to your gas provider is now a prerequisite to keeping your kitchen running.
